I was sick this morning, so my boyfriend made me hot tea. With a slice of lemon. And I love ginger, so he, like, cut up some fresh ginger and, like, cut open the teabag and put the ginger in it and then somehow closed it back up and it was so good and he is so nice. Oh my goddd….. He has ruined my standards…. If he leaves me, I will have to take up with a cyborg engineered to look like Jude Law… with the abs of Jesus, the brain of Einstein, and the heart of the Dalai Lama… or something…..

It was a hot Monday. The city was gold with the halos of almost-summer—the air buzzed like a hive, the light was yellow and foreign, the warmth stuck to our skins like honey. Sundresses drifted down the baking sidewalks like clouds of butterflies. We decided to get drinks. There were four of us. Me, my boyfriend, and another couple I’d only just met. We drove down Alberta Street until we saw a lounge with a balcony. We walked up a flight of narrow stairs to the bar and got hibiscus margaritas with pretty halos of rock salt. We took them outside and sat at a little table under the tall, blue sky. The talk was good. The drinks were strong. My boyfriend and I kept giving each other smiles—his gentle grey eyes making me daydream about California mountains and big white hotel beds. The tequila bloomed in my brain like fireworks. I got a little dizzy, my laughter stumbling over itself. Someone brought an old, smiling black lab up the stairs. He put his head in my lap and sighed with happiness. I leaned close to my boyfriend, gestured to the dog, and said “I think I’m in love.” He smiled and squeezed my hand and whispered “Someday we’ll have one of our own.” My heart burned and floundered. We took his friends back to their house, a beautiful old two-story house painted baby blue with a big front porch on a street all shady and green under tall walnut trees. We went back home. We slow danced around the kitchen. We got takeout from our favorite Thai place down the street. Our friends came over and we talked about all going to Outside Lands in San Francisco this summer. We watched cartoons. We went to bed. The window was open and the night hummed like an engine, the train horns blurred in the big, hot darkness, the sodium lights sad and orange on our quiet street. I woke up to him kissing my neck, sighing in my ear, and telling me that on quiet mornings like this, when his roommates are at work, and it’s just the two of us, he likes to pretend that we are older and this is our house. Just ours.
